Some people ask, and others may be wondering, why this blog is called Christian Unitarian Ark? Here's an explanation:
Christian because I’m a follower of Jesus. He’s been badly misunderstood and seriously misrepresented but I believe he was the one that Israel was waiting for, (hence 'Christ'), and he is the one that the world is waiting for. He has all the answers.Unitarian because Jesus was a Unitarian. His mission was, and remains, to uphold the law of the one God, to reform our understanding of it so that we grasp its spirit contained within the letter, and to make it applicable and available to the entire gentile world.
Unitarian in affirmation of the roots of the tradition known as Unitarianism, which sought to restore the original teaching of Jesus, especially rejecting doctrines such as the Trinity, Predestination, Penal Substitution, and the eternal conscious torment of unbelievers.
Unitarian in affirmation of the oneness, not only of God, but of humanity, and so seeking faith that is for all people everywhere.
Unitarian in affirmation of our tradition’s embrace of freedom, reason and tolerance, being ever mindful of our roots as dissenters.
Christian Unitarian in order to embrace Unitarianism as distinct from Christianity, with all its errors and sins. Unitarianism, in its original and early conception, is closer to the teaching of Jesus than Christianity. Having never been embroiled with the state, it has never had Christianity's power to do harm. Unitarians are rejected by Christianity, considered heretics, non-Christians. Classical Christian Unitarianism rejects Christianity as unchristian. As a Christian Unitarian, therefore, I wish to place myself outside of Christianity and within Unitarianism. Unitarianism is rejected by Christianity because it rejects those inventions, errors and distortions of Biblical teaching that are fundamental to Christianity. Since Unitarianism has embraced non-Christian teaching it is necessary to qualify the term Unitarian with the word Christian. To be a Christian Unitarian is to place the emphasis on the noun Unitarian, qualified by the adjective Christian, rather than the other way round (Unitarian Christian).
Christian Unitarian Ark because the world is going badly wrong, not just in terms of events and situations, but also in its thought and faith. A Christian Unitarian Revival is sorely needed, but the signs are that we are heading into a period of simply trying to preserve the faith. The model of the Ark is apposite because it was the place where that which was good was preserved in order to provide a new, better start once the flood was over. It expresses an attitude towards the past, present and future. I expect a Christian Unitarian revival in the future. In anticipation of that, the task, right now, is to gather, preserve and renew, in hopeful preparation for the future. This is the mission of faithful congregations. This blog isn’t going to do all that, but its title is a reflection of how I see the task of a Christian Unitarian right now.
